I enjoyed learning discipline and self-control
All of the favorite things I have learned in karate have not been about karate itself, but rather the character lessons I have been taught. See, I have been fortunate enough to never need to seriously defend myself against an attacker in my lifetime, but I may have if the skills I learned from karate had not been taught. The number one thing I enjoyed having learned was discipline and self-control. They have served me valuably on many occasions, and while I don’t always successfully manage to use those skills, I am always improving. Other useful skills I have learned include those of de-escalating situations, which has been important in me not getting into fights, which may have happened had I not been ready to stop, and reinforcement of positive behavior regarding respect to our seniors (and our juniors, for that matter).
